Engineering Manager, Scientific Modalities

San Francisco, CA, USA
Job Description

ROLE OVERVIEW

Benchling is on a mission to unlock the power of biotechnology.

The Scientific Modalities team builds tools and platform that help scientists do their research - like our molecular biology suite, which scientists use to analyze and work with DNA, RNA and proteins. Some of the tools help scientists better manage their data and collaborate easily replacing their spreadsheets, pen and paper workflows, while others are tools that are innovatively built to enable new forms of research in cloud by integrating with the rich Benchling platform. We are also looking towards extending the capabilities with a rich ecosystem of first party and third party applications.

We're looking for an experienced manager to support the engineers on one of the Scientific Modalities teams. We're particularly excited to hear from managers with a track record of obsessing over customer needs and product quality as they build their roadmaps and guide their team's execution.  This role can be in SF, Boston or Remote.

WHAT YOU WILL WORK ON

  • Recruit, develop, and grow a team of exceptional full-stack product engineers.
  • Partner closely with product, design, and data science to define the team's roadmap and long-term product strategy.
  • Translate strategy in to execution by developing and executing quarterly roadmaps with clear metrics and targets.
  • Hold an unreasonably high bar for product quality as the team executes its work.
  • Meet with customers to understand their science & what they need from Benchling.
  • Build a strong partnership with stakeholders across other engineering organizations and other functions across the company.
  • Engage executive leadership on the long term product and business goals and strategy for the team
  • Contribute to engineering-wide organizational improvements as part of the management team.
Desired Skills & Experience

ABOUT YOU

  • Experience managing high-performing engineering teams.
  • Managed engineering teams that were responsible for a customer-focused product.
  • Managed geographically distributed teams.
  • Grown high-trajectory, early-to-mid-career engineers into leaders with company-wide impact.
  • Experience (and enjoy!) working directly with customers to inform your team's roadmap.
  • Interest in science, biology or biotechnology!
